Twelve years ago, I took a leap of faith and joined a campaign that, by all conventional wisdom, should not have worked. A candidate whose name wasn’t even on the ballot. A grassroots movement fueled by determination, resilience, and a belief that the city of Detroit deserved leadership that would deliver real results.

I was there in 2013 when Mike Duggan’s historic write-in campaign took off—not as a long-shot, but as a force. We built something from the ground up, knocking doors, engaging communities, and proving that leadership isn’t about status; it’s about impact. Against all odds, the people of Detroit made the choice clear, and Mayor Duggan was elected to lead this city.
When he stepped into office, so did I. Over the years, I wore many hats—Scheduling and Advance, City Council Liaison, Director of Government Affairs, and ultimately, Chief of Staff. Every role came with new challenges, but each one reinforced why I was there in the first place: to serve. I had the privilege of working alongside an incredible team, driving initiatives that changed lives, strengthening relationships across communities, and making sure government actually worked for the people who needed it most, not just the people who were the loudest.

And now, here I am again—back on the campaign trail, but this time, for a bigger mission. Mayor Duggan is running for Governor of Michigan as an Independent, and I am stepping into a new role as Finance Director for his campaign. This moment is more than just another election cycle; it’s a testament to what’s possible when you put people over politics. I was in there in Lansing advocating for policies that would benefit the communities like Land Value Tax and Public Safety Trust Fund. I remember the long hours, disappointing days, and the political games that were played, not because of the policy itself, but the party lines and who was attached to it. It broke my heart seeing each party prioritize the policies that are so out of touch with everyday people as they continue to miss the mark. That's why I am thrilled to support a fellow independent in this gubernatorial election approaching.
Returning to campaign life feels like coming home. The energy, the drive, the long nights and early mornings—it’s all worth it when you believe in the mission. And I do. Because I’ve seen firsthand what real leadership looks like. I know the difference it makes when you focus on results instead of party lines. And I know that Michigan is ready for something different too!
This isn’t just a campaign; it’s a movement. A movement for better governance, for practical solutions, and for leadership that puts people first. Two weeks ago, I officially resigned from the city of Detroit and have taken the role as Finance Director last week. I’m honored to take on this role, to help fuel the work ahead, and to once again be part of a team that refuses to accept the status quo.
